Ragdale Hall - Babymoon Paradise

Laura Mason visits the award-winning spa resort, Ragdale Hall, set in the picturesque outskirts of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.

It’s a known fact that pregnancy can be tough on the body – from the aching swollen feet, bad back, heartburn….need I go on?!

In light of the impending new life about to inject some madness within your seemingly calm lives, I’ve always felt it good practice to indulge in some r’n’r pre baby. Whether it’s valuable couple time, a chance to have a last hurrah with some girlfriends or just the chance to allow the experts to wait on you hand and foot.

I recently visited the place of babymoon heaven – Ragdale Hall Health Hydro and Thermal Spa. Located on the outskirts of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, it’s a nice distance from Essex meaning you won’t get too uncomfy on a long car journey yet feel as though you’re far enough that you are taking a break somewhere special.

This award-winning spa keeps scooping award after award and upon arrival we were delighted to see exactly why. A residential spa, visitors can come for a day or stay as long as they like on one of the many set packages or customise a stay tailored to individual preferences.

The check in is a casual affair and having been shown to the café with a complimentary welcome drink, the staff came to us to complete the paperwork and show us to our room. My husband and I were on the Overnight Reviver package for one night so lying in wait on our bed was a schedule of treatments, meal times and activities.

The room itself was incredibly spacious – excellent four-star quality with a sprawling king bed, luxuriously super soft chairs, impeccable bathroom and a view out to the rolling hills of Melton Mowbray. I could have easily whiled away my time in the room however with sooo much on offer, I was more like a kid in a sweet shop!

Ragdale Hall is large enough that everyone is provided with a map. Guests are left at leisure and with so much on offer it can be overwhelming but some careful planning you find your feet and I must admit I wrote off any exercises classes or anything too strenuous during our stay with a focus on pure respite. Having said that, I did peep into the gym – fully equipped with very latest state of the art machines – and also the studios that offer a fantastic range of classes from the more standard Legs, Bums and Tums and Cycling sessions to more core classes of Tai Chi and Pilates right through to Hula Hoop fitness!

The highlight of Ragdale Hall is undoubtedly its spa. The impressive 23 metre swimming pool is a great warm up to get in a few lengths, while the smaller pool features a unique water gym – specialist gym equipment that works against the waters resistance. The thermal spa is perfect for any mum-to-be to relax, it features a number of rooms that have proven benefits to improving your health and wellbeing and more importantly, provide optimum opportunity to relax and focus on yourself. Rooms include a candle pool, rose sauna, volcanic spa bath and colour flow cave in addition to an indoor/outdoor waterfall pool. It is worth noting that some of the rooms may not be suitable for pregnant ladies but advice is available on the door to each room.

With over 50 treatment rooms, it is definitely recommended to indulge in a treatment. A comprehensive menu has something for everyone covering every part of the body. For pregnant ladies the Elemis Nurturing Massage is 85 minutes of pure bliss with techniques and combinations proved to release tension and alleviate swelling while guiding you into a sumptuous state of comfort and relaxation.

For those pregnancy cravings you won’t go hungry – the buffet lunch is amazing! An extensive selection of fresh delights with some cooked before your eyes; and the dinner is a casual affair with a specially created menu that is graded by healthiness allowing you to opt for some nutritiously healthy dishes or some indulgent treats.

As far as spas go, I am happy to state that this is the best I have ever visited! From the widespread range of facilities on offer, to the impeccable service, to the quality of care and attention from all of the attentive staff – it is worth every penny for a mother to be or tired and stressed parent that needs a boost every once in a while.
